The Purpose and Interchangering Mode of the Interchanger

Interchanger is a kind of network equipment used for photoelectric signal forwarding. It can provide exclusive electrical signal access for any two network nodes accessing the interchanger. The most common interchangeres are Ethernet interchangeres, others are telephone voice interchangeres, optical fiber interchangeres, and so on.

The Purpose of The interchanger

1. Study: The Ethernet interchanger understands the MAC address of each port connected device and maps the address to the corresponding port in the MAC address table in the interchanger cache.

2. Forward/filter: When a destination address of a data frame is mapped in the MAC address table, it will be forwarded to the port connected the destination node instead of all ports.

3. Eliminate the loop: When the interchanger has redundant loop, the Ethernet interchanger avoids loop generation through spanning tree protocol, while allowing the presence of a backup path.

In addition to being able to connect to the same type of network, the interchanger can also play an interconnection between different types of networks. Today, many interchangeres can provide high-speed connection ports that support networks such as Fast Ethernet or FDDI.

The interchangering Mode of The interchanger

1. Cut-through: A cut-through Ethernet interchanger can be understood as a line matrix telephone interchanger that intersects vertically and horizontally between ports. When a packet is detected at an input port, it checks the packet header, obtains the destination address of the packet then starts the internal dynamic look-up table and converts it into the corresponding output port. After that, it connects at the intersection of input and output, connects the packet directly to the corresponding port, and realizes the interchangering function. Its advantages are that it does not need storage, the delay is very small, and the interchangering speed is very fast. Its disadvantage is that it is unable to check for errors in the forwarded packets and does not provide error detection capabilities.

2. Store-and-Forward: Store-and-forward mode is the most widely used mode in the field of computer network. It stores the packet of the input port first, then carries on the CRC check, takes out the destination address of the packet after processing the wrong packet, and then converts the packet into the output port through the look-up table to send out the packet. It has a large delay in data processing. However, it can detect errors in packets entering the interchanger and effectively improve network performance.

3. Fragment Free: This is a solution between Cut-through and Store-and-Forward. It checks whether the packet is 64 bytes, If the packet is less than 64 bytes, it is a false packet, the packet will be discarded. If it is greater than 64 bytes, the packet is sent. This method also does not have the data check function. Its data processing speed is faster than that of Store-and-Forward, but slower than that of Cut-through.

The poor heat dissipation performance of the interchanger will cause the element to burn out. Therefore, it is necessary to select a good heatsink for the interchanger.
