Basic Knowledge of Computer Water Cooling

Water cooling is a kind of liquid cooling. After water cooling was introduced into personal computers, special heat-conducting liquid was not available in the early days but only water was used. Now the main component of water cooling liquid is water, so people still call it water cooling habitually.

1.Introduction of water cooling

Computer water cooling is similar to car engine water cooling, which uses liquid to absorb heat and transfer it to the heatsink, and then uses air cooling or passive heat dissipation to dissipate heat. The secret of the water cooling system's strong heat dissipation capability lies in the fact that the heat absorption and heat conductivity of water are much better than that of air, and the total heat dissipation area of water cooling system is also much larger than that of air cooling system. Thus makes water cooling heat sink the best laptop cooling solution.

2. Performance advantages

At 25℃, the thermal conductivity of air is only 0.024 W/mk, while that of water is 0.58 W/mk, which is over 24 times that of air. Also in a 25℃ environment, the specific heat capacity of air is 1012 J/(kgk), while the specific heat capacity of water is 4186 J/(kgk), which is more than four times that of air. That is to say, it takes more than 4℃ of heat for air to raise the temperature of water of the same quality by 1℃. Therefore, water is inherently superior to air as a heat conducting and absorbing medium.

3. Mute Advantage

Relying on a cold row with a large heat dissipation area or a passive cast heatsink metal water tank, the water cooling system only needs a very low fan rotation speed to obtain sufficient heat dissipation capacity. The low noise of several low-speed fans will not be several times that of a low-speed fan, but will only be slightly higher than that of a single low-speed fan, which is very important for users who need quietness. When the room temperature is low, some water cooling systems even don’t need fans,and some heat pipe cpu cooler will be used. 

4. Personalized appearance

Water-cooling system has always been a symbol of cool, especially the medium and high-end water-cooling system. The strong contrast between water and water-afraid boards, coupled with water-cooled components with excellent texture, it is not difficult to create a unique and beautiful appearance with little effort. Because everyone chooses different chassis, boards, cold heads, pipe routing, layout and decorative lights, it is difficult to have two sets of water cooling systems that look similar unless they are deliberately imitated. 

5. Flexible installation

The heat absorption, heat conduction and heat dissipation components of the Vapor Chamber cpu cooler are usually non-detachable. Although the total volume is small, it is easily limited by the layout of the main board and the space of the chassis. However, the heat absorbing part, the heat conducting part and the heat dissipating part of the water cooling system are separated respectively and can be flexibly arranged by connecting with each other through soft water pipes. The volume of the cold head installed on the mainboard is much smaller than that of the high tower air-cooled radiator, and it rarely conflicts with other surrounding components. Depending on the inherent advantage of dispersed volume, water cooling system can sometimes make more reasonable use of the fragmentary space in the machine than air cooling system, which is basically not limited by the layout of the main board and the air duct is more flexible.

6. Higher price

Each air-cooled component is a separate individual. You can buy only one CPU air-cooled heatsink or only one graphics card radiator. However, this is not the case for water cooling. Even if you only intend to cool the CPU, you must purchase "public infrastructure" such as water pumps and cold drains, otherwise you cannot form a complete water cooling system, which makes the price threshold for water cooling relatively high. 

7. Leakage risk

Water cooling system components have made great progress now. As long as you do a good job of water testing, water leakage caused by component quality problems or compatibility problems is rare. However, water leakage incidents caused by improper operation or planning still occur from time to time, and usually occur to beginners. Water leakage, especially the water leakage that caused the burning of hardware, is the most serious blow to beginners. Many beginners give up water cooling after the water leakage.
